For New Patients
Psychiatric treatment starts with the initial appointment where we focus on why you are starting or continuing psychiatric care. What are your concerns and what have you noticed about yourself? What are your strengths and your goals? I may ask several other questions about your overall health, your current school and work life and habits, your family and friendships and use of drugs or other substances.
This initial information may take one or up to 3 appointments and with children will typically involve meeting with parents and children separately.
During these appointments we will begin to discuss together how to continue to best support your goals. This could lead to a decision for psychotherapy that could include your own individual sessions, or for a child could include family/parent guidance, consultation for further medical and/or psychological testing, educational or psychological testing. Referrals for group or other professional consultations will be discussed. Discussion of potential support from medication could be included as well.
